This habit is one that I have found to be essential to keeping on top of ever-changing work flow
When Alice had to explain herself and expressed her confusion as to where to start, the Red King advised she "Begin at the beginning, continue on until you come to the end, then stop." (Louis Carrol, Alice in Wonderland)
Wise words indeed.
In order to be effective at any task, or in life, establishing priorities is the first step.
Once you have determined the first step, determine the next and the next, until you come to the end, then stop. This way, you can tackle the tasks in the order that is most effective.
I always have lists. I'm a list-maker. I don't always follow my lists, but I have them. I find this is an effective way to focus, establish an order for doing things, then get through my day, program, class, challenge, etc etc etc.
When priorities, tasks or curriculums change, the effective teacher will re-establish the order of priority. She will find out where to begin and go from there. Without first establishing what is most important, she runs the risk of heading down the wrong path or spinning in circles.
Doing things in this way will help the teacher (or coach or doctor or paper-hanger, etc) stay focused and on task.
